Indonesia is one of IIASA’s 22 member countries – represented by the Indonesian National Committee since 2012. During this time, IIASA has worked with a range of research partners in Indonesia including the Indonesia Presidential Delivery Unit (UKP4) to apply systems analysis to solve some of the country’s challenges.

At this morning's meeting in Vienna, the IIASA delegation led by Director General and CEO Professor Dr Pavel Kabat, agreed to develop a substantial cross-sector study on the energy futures of Indonesia, in a South Asian and global context. This will build on the findings of the Global Energy Assessment, which was coordinated by IIASA and published in 2012.

In 2014 IIASA launched the Tropical Futures Initiative (TFI) at a workshop in Jakarta. The TFI which started with a focus on tropical deforestation, is planned to expand into interconnected issues such as greenhouse gas emissions, air pollution, agriculture, and water.

In addition IIASA’s Ecosystem Services and Management (ESM) Program is collaborating with the UKP4, the International Energy Agency (IEA), and the Center for International Forestry Research (CIFOR) to explore opportunities of BioEnergy in combination with Carbon Capture and Storage (BECCS) for Indonesia. BECCS is the only technology by which a country can actually reduce the level of carbon dioxide in our atmosphere, rather than just stabilize it. Recently, two BECCS expert meetings have been organized by IIASA, IEA, and the Indonesian government to analyze this possibility.

During the meeting Kabat invited members of the Minister’s Delivery Unit to visit IIASA to familiarize themselves with the models and tools that IIASA uses and develops. And an agreement was reached to host a major workshop in September to further scope the cross-sector energy study.
