Governance and leadership

IIASA is governed by a Council which includes one representative of each of IIASA's member countries. Reporting to the governing Council, the Director General and Deputy Director General for Science lead and manage the activities of the Institute.

The IIASA Governing Council

The Council is the governing body of the institute. It sets the IIASA strategy, determines financial and managerial policies along with IIASA research areas, and provides oversight of the institute among other roles and responsibilities.

Professor Alexei Gvishiani became the Acting Chair of IIASA Governing Council on 19 June 2017.

The Council Members represent National Member Organizations during the Council meetings.

Professor Dr. Pavel Kabat commenced his appointment as Director General and CEO of IIASA in February 2012.

Nebojsa Nakicenovic is Deputy Director General/Deputy Chief Executive Officer of IIASA.
