09 February 2015 - 10 February 2015
IIASA researcher Stefan Thurner, an expert in mathematical analysis of complex systems, and IIASA Director General and CEO Professor Dr. Pavel Kabat will both speak at the event. Thurner will chair the first session of the conference, entitled, "Taming Complexity: Controlling Networks." On 10 February, the second day of the conference, Kabat will chair a session entitled "Understanding Human Society with a Social Petri Dish." Thurner will also give a presentation on "Complexity, Big Data, and Healthcare Challenges."
"Understanding Complexity – Offering Solutions to Problems of the 21st Century "
February 9th- 10th 2015 "TUtheSky" at the TU Wien, Getreidemarkt 9, 1060 Vienna, Austria.
In a world that is getting more and more interconnected, complexity becomes more and more relevant.
Understanding complexity by means of quantitative and predictive science turns out to become a bottleneck in essential aspects of our world, ranging from the taming of financial markets, design of sustainable health care systems, developing smart sustainable cities,
management of supply chains, to opinion formation, and virtual life.
Ten leading complex systems scientists from around the world will present their work
and provide an overview of where science of complexity stands today, what the big
challenges and bottlenecks are, and what society might expect from a better understanding
and management of complex adaptive systems.
