15 September 2017
Palais Niederösterreich, Herrengasse 13, 1010, Vienna
The Science Festival is organized by the Lower Austria Government to connect research institutions in the region to public. Starting at 3pm on the 15th of September in Palais Niederösterreich in Vienna’s first district, the event will host about 60 stands showcasing inspiring research with hands-on experiences, scientific innovations and discoveries. The Festival offers a varied program for the entire family ranging from exciting acts to fun activities.
IIASA will demo its latest citizen science project, FotoQuest Go, at the event. FotoQuest Go is an app for collecting observations of land use and land cover across Austria. The objective of FotoQuest Go is to track the changes in the landscape and better analyze the impact of these changes on the environment. With the new campaign that launches on the 19th of September, participants will earn 1EUR for each quest they successfully complete. For more information, please visit our FotoQuest Go webpage.
Join us at the Lower Austria Science Festival and find out how you can help to conserve Austria’s beautiful nature for future generations!

FotoQuest Go
Every day around 150,000 m² of soil are being turned into roads, businesses, homes and recreational areas in Austria, which leads to soil degradation and an increasing risk of flooding, water scarcity, unproductive agricultural land and heat waves in cities, contributing to global warming.
FotoQuest Go, a citizen science app for land use and land cover monitoring across Austria, can track the effect of these changes in our landscape and help to conserve Austria’s nature for future generations.
Citizen-powered scientific results from FotoQuest Go will be compared with LUCAS (Land Use and Coverage Area frame Survey of EUROSTAT), which is only carried out in every 3 years and the data is expensive to gather.
