On November 16, IIASA will co-host a session at the conference with the United Nations Environment Program (UNEP) World Conservation Monitoring Center (WCMC), entitled "Supporting landscape-scale planning for REDD+: How useful are land-use change models?" The GLF is held in concert with the COP19 climate change conference, in which IIASA researchers will also participate.

Land-use change models allow an assessment of how policies (including those for REDD+) affect land cover and use; including through impacts on agriculture, economics, biodiversity and ecosystem services. Models that can represent the different relevant sectors including forestry, crop production and grazing can therefore support landscape scale planning for agriculture, climate change mitigation and adaptation. This session will explore the interactions between different sectoral policies including mitigation, adaptation and biodiversity conservation, and how land-use change models can be used for landscape scale planning, focusing on planning for REDD+. The session will take the form of a series of 10 minute presentations from experts followed by an extended open discussion (of about 1 hour).
