Consultative Meeting on Post 2015 Development Agenda

With the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) coming to an end in 2015, the world currently faces the twofold challenge of designing a new framework for development that both incorporates the successes of the MDGs while at the same time aiming at tackling their shortcomings. In the meantime, the nature and dynamics of poverty have been changing. Development took place within a context of growing inequality both within and between countries. The majority of poor people now live in middle-income countries and most of them in cities as urbanization is proceeding at an accelerated pace. Challenges to past development achievements and future opportunities include global environmental change, economic crises, conflict and instability.

The United Nations Secretary General Ban Ki-moon has established a High Level Panel (HLP) charged with the responsibility of consulting and consolidating global voices on a Post-2015 Development Framework. The first meeting of the HLP took place in September 2012. The second meeting, held in London in November 2012, put a thematic focus on eradicating poverty and empowering the poor and a meeting in Monrovia at the end of January 2013 will revolve around national capacities for future development goals. In keeping with the emphasis on strategies for partnership and cooperation for development the HLP will be meeting in Bali, starting from March 24th-27th 2013.

The Panel is comprised of 27 members, including Heads of State, Ministers, former Ministers and independent experts. It is chaired by Prime Minister David Cameron, President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono and President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf. The Head of President’s Delivery Unit for Development Monitoring and Oversight (UKP4) Kuntoro Mangkusubroto is assigned by President Yudhoyono to chair the National Committee on Post-2015 Development Agenda

The Academia Stakeholders Consultative Meeting aims at generating structured recommendations addressing key issues and challenges identified by the academic community. The recommendations are then to be submitted to the HLP. For that purpose, the consultative meeting will be held in two sessions. The morning session will try to identify the future challenges of post-2015 development agenda through introductory presentations on world population projection and surrounding issues, current state of poverty, energy and resource transformation and, finally, ecosystem and environmental challenges. The introductory presentations will then be followed by interactive discussion and conclusions.
Subsequent to the challenges and key issues identified in the morning session, the afternoon session aims at gathering recommendations on how those challenges need to be addressed in the post-2015 development agenda. The role of development policies, global institutions and partnership and science and technology will be the focus of discussion in this session.
