With proponents arguing that it improves effectiveness through ownership and shared responsibility, stakeholder participation in climate change and sustainability research and practice has attracted a lot of attention. In particular, the inter- and transdisciplinary nature of these research strands requires developing and implementing effective stakeholder involvement in deliberative processes to co-produce and co-assess policy options, which respect plural values and rationalities of involved actor groups.

The 1st annual workshop for young CCCA (Climate Chance Center Austria) researchers, initiated as a follow-up to the annual “Klimatag” conference, will reflect on these developments from young researchers’ perspectives. Participants will share their own experiences, best practices and challenges encountered in developing and applying participatory methods and tools. With the eventual aim of co-designing ideas for joint research projects in the future, these aspects will be discussed with Anna Scolobig, former Guest Research Scholar in IIASA’s RISK program and experienced researcher in the field of participatory processes for disaster risk reduction.

The CCCA’s Junior Researchers Working Group invites all young scientists (Pre-Docs and early Post-Docs) at Austrian Universities to apply. They will be given the opportunity to discuss current and future research projects focusing on participatory methods in climate change and sustainability research with fellow young scientists and a leading expert.

The CCCA

The Climate Change Center Austria was founded in Vienna on 18 July 2011. It is a networking platform for researchers, politicians, the media, and the public for all questions concerning climate research in Austria. Thus, the CCCA promotes a sustainable climate dialog. Within the CCA there are strategic and thematic working groups. They consider and discuss specific projects, activities, or issues of strategic importance to the CCCA in a more comprehensive format. One of these is the Junior Researchers working group. The junior research group aims at networking and supporting young researchers in the CCCA member institutions and is also financially supported by the CCCA. It is chaired by Thomas Schinko, Research Scholar in IIASA’s RISK program, in collaboration with Martha Stangl from the CCCA Service Center and supported by CCCA board member and RISK Deputy Director Reinhard Mechler.
