FLAGSHIP 2nd Workshop

Anne Goujon and Samir KC will participate in this follow-up meeting on grand societal challenges and global scenarios.



With recognized records of excellence in qualitative, as well as in quantitative forward-looking analysis IIASA Research Scholar Anne Goujon is part of the multidisciplinary Forward Looking Analysis of Grand Societal Challenges and Innovative Policies (FLAGSHIP) project team. As such she is participating at the 2nd FLAGSHIP workshop on "Economic, social and environmental challenges and their feedback into integrated scenarios building".

Samir KC, Leader of the Modelling Human Capital Project, was invited as external expert to present the World Population Program's Shared Socioeconomic Pathways (SSPs) scenarios in parallel session 3, where together with other experts he will try to answer the question of whether global scenarios should be going for growth or socio-ecological transition.

This one-day event is organized under the umbrella of the FLAGSHIP consortium, which is committed to support the formulation of new policies capable of effectively address global challenges. Precisely, the event will provide an opportunity to reflect and discuss about the Grand Societal Challenges, and to share views and contributions about the innovative tools, methods and models that the FLAGSHIP project is currently developing.

The workshop will mainly discuss:

  • FLAGSHIP models: adaptations to address grand societal challenges
  • FLAGSHIP Global Scenarios: going for growth or socio-ecological transition?
  • FLAGSHIP view on territorial governance: global trends, regional impacts


FLAGSHIP is an FP7 project, funded by the European Commission (DG RESEARCH) under the “Socio-Economic Sciences and Humanities” theme, with the aim of developing a “Forward Looking Analysis of Grand Societal Challenges and Innovative Policies” and runs until December 2015. The FLAGSHIP project aims at driving change, supporting the policy shift from adapting to changes through short-term policy responses, towards anticipating, welcoming and managing changes properly. The Vienna Institute of Demograph of the Austrian Academy of Sciences, one pillar of the Wittgenstein Centre for Demography and Global Human Capital (IIASA, VID/ÖAW, WU), is one of the 16 project partners with Dimiter Philipov as Principal investigator.
