OeAW Kerner von Marilaun Lecture: Erich Striessnig

Erich Striessnig will speak at the Austrian Academy of Sciences about education as disaster management

As part of the Kerner von Marilaun Lectures the Austrian Academy of Sciences has invited five specialists to discuss their views on the challenges and opportunities resulting from natural disasters under the title "Land under - living with extreme floods". Undoubtedly, climate change will cause more natural disasters in the future. Today, it is common knowledge, that it will not be sufficient to battle the causes of climate change, but the world has to adapt to those imminent changes.

IIASA scientist Erich Striessnig will give a presentation entitled "education as disaster management", where he argues that educational attainment within a population has shown to be an effective protection against natural disasters. This is because education enables access to precautionary information, it changes human behavior in regard to risk situations, it increases the individual range of strategies and reduces human vulnerability through the impact on health related behavior. Based on new projections from the Wittgenstein Centre, Striessnig will show how this will have a long-term impact on the death rate after natural disasters.
The lectures will be given in German.
