Measures to reduce air pollution from ships can have negative impacts on water quality and marine life. The aim of EMERGE is to understand these trade-offs, assess their relevance for the different sea regions in Europe, and to identify the best possible emission controls.
The project is coordinated by the Finnish Meteorological Institute and the Swedish Environmental Research Institute. The EMERGE consortium aims to come up with a first assessment of the impact of ship emissions to air and water for the whole of Europe. The IIASA Air Quality and Greenhouse Gases Program contributes its expertise on environmental impact and cost-benefit assessments.
This project has received funding from the European Union's Horizon2020 research and innovation programme under grant agreement #874990 (EMERGE project). This work reflects only the authors’ view and INEA is not responsible for any use that may be made of the information it contains.
