Anthony Patt, 1997 YSSP

Full Professor of Climate Policy at the Institute for Environmental Decisions, ETH Zürich, Switzerland

Prof. Patt studied architecture (Yale Univ.) and law (Duke Univ.) before moving into the field of public policy (PhD Harvard, 2000). After working as Assistant Professor at Boston University, with stays as visiting fellow at the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research and the Hanse Institute for Advanced Studies in Delmenhorst, Germany, he joined the International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis in 2006, where he headed the research group Decisions and Governance. In 2013 he moved to his current position at ETH Zürich. His research and teaching concerns policy instruments leading to effective societal change, and is based on both modeling and empirical research.

Regarding his YSSP experience, he states, "it was the experience that clarified for me that I wanted to work primarily in an interdisciplinary manner, on applied policy problems rather than theory-driven questions. It also was an important stepping stone in moving from the United States into the European research community."
