As an international research institution, IIASA has developed with an understanding of the principles of equal opportunity, anti-discrimination, gender balance, cultural respect, and geographical distribution in its hiring, promotion, administrative practices, and all IIASA activities, especially its research. The institute’s Council, management, and staff are committed to maintaining a working environment that demonstrates and promotes diversity, equity, and tolerance and integrating the diversity dimension in research and innovation content. This in turn strengthens the scientific quality and societal relevance of the produced knowledge, and/or innovation.
In support of the IIASA Strategy (2021-2030) and the Institute’s Research Plan (2021-24), IIASA introduced a Diversity Policy in 2021 which includes a range of ongoing and new initiatives. Among these is the commitment to establish a IIASA Gender Equality Plan (GEP). IIASA will use the European Commission’s Gender Equality in Academia and Research tool as a framework for the institute’s GEP. IIASA will commit dedicated resources to the GEP, collect and analyze sex-disaggregated data and implement gender-related training for our staff.
Other activities include the IIASA Women in Science Club, which is a network for people connected to science at IIASA interested in amplifying the scientific contributions of women. As well as regularly publishing statistics about the diversity of IIASA staff in the annual report (see the latest figures for 2020).
