Joint workshop on economic integration between Europe and Eurasia

IIASA (Laxenburg, Austria) hosts a joint workshop of the Working Group “Common Economic Space from Lisbon to Vladivostok” (L2V) and IIASA project “Challenges and opportunities of economic integration within a wider European and Eurasian space” aimed at sharing experience and knowledge, as well as at defining areas and modalities of mutually beneficial collaboration.

L2V joins German and other European companies interested in developing economic-trade relations with Russia, the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU) and other post-Soviet states designated. Representatives of German business – members of L2V are visiting IIASA to learn about the Eurasian Economic Integration project and discuss possible cooperation. Preliminary results of three fast-track research projects carried out by IIASA that are of direct relevance to the European business community will be presented:

1. EU – EAEU: foreign direct investment;
2. Trans-Eurasian transport corridors;
3. EU – EAEU: aligning TBT and SPS policies.

Conversely, the L2V Working Group will also present their studies on matters, concerning technical regulations, customs/logistics and visa simplification between the EU and the EAEU.

Research Project "Challenges and Opportunities of Economic Integration within a wider European and Eurasian Space"

The international and interdisciplinary research project “Challenges and Opportunities of Economic Integration within a wider European and Eurasian Space”, which was launched by IIASA in 2013, aims to discuss and analyse issues of economic integration within the Eurasian continent. European and Eurasian cooperation extends to the key Asian players, such as ChinaKorea and Japan, as well as the USA. The multidisciplinary approach of the project include economic, technological, institutional, demographic, sectorial (finance and investment, energy, infrastructure, etc.) aspects of Pan-European/Eurasian development.
The three-year research project consists of a series of workshops at which specific aspects of integration are discussed by scientists and stakeholders representing all interested regions; follow-up discussion summaries outline the state-of-the-art in this field and reflect on different futures.
The project has been discussed and initially supported by the European Commission, the Eurasian Economic Commission, the Eurasian Development Bank, the Russian Academy of Sciences, and some other European and Eurasian institutions.
As a result of this project’s international multidisciplinary and independent nature, it is well positioned to provide scientific substantiation in support of possible options for trade policies across all major parties involved in this region, in addition to its scientific methodological contributions.

Working Group “Common Economic Space from Lisbon to Vladivostok” (L2V)

In November 2015, a working group was formed in Berlin that started to work on a concrete concept for a common economic space from Vladivostok to Lisbon.
The working group is based on five associations, the Eastern Committee of the German Economy, German-Russian Forum, German-Russian Chamber of Commerce, Eastern Europe Business Association of Germany and the Raw Materials Forum.
The working group so far comprises participants from Germany, Poland, Ukraine, Belarus, Russia and other countries. Its aim is to have members from all countries between the Atlantic and the Pacific. The group is working on concepts how the European Union (EU) and the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU) could cooperate, considering also all countries in between. It asks the Commissions of the two unions to initiate talks on such cooperation.
