ENE Research focuses on both the representation of long-term development pathways for air pollution and the impacts due to policies in the short-term. This research is carried out in collaboration with the Mitigation of Air Pollution program. This research has contributed to development of the Representative Concentration Pathway (RCP8.5) and Chapter 17 of the Global Energy Assessment.
Research findings stress the need for better integration of policies for effective air pollution control. Pollution control measures across all sectors need to be tightened beyond those in present and planned legislation in order to meet World Health Organization (WHO) air quality standards. Estimated global costs to meet the air pollution target are about 10–20% of energy costs and could result in about 20 million disability-adjusted life years saved in 2030. This estimate accounts for ancillary benefits of stringent climate change mitigation policies that reduce overall pollution control costs by about 50–65%.
