Under the title "Transition toward Sustainability after 15 Years: Where Do We Stand in Advancing the Scientific Foundation", this workshop brings together leading scientists to discuss progress in sustainability science during the last 15 years, identify potential opportunities for advancing the research and use of scientific knowledge to support a transition toward sustainability, and challenges specifically related to establishing metrics/indicators and observations to support sustainability research and practice.

Wolfgang Lutz was invited to give a keynote with the title "Informing Sustainability Science through Advances in Environmental Decision Making and Other Areas of Science". Lutz is one of the leading international demographers, and member of the Committee on Population of the US National Academy of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine, elected full member of the Austrian Academy of Sciences and of the German National Academy Leopoldina, and elected fellow at the World Academy of Sciences (TWAS)

The outcomes of the workshop will be used to stimulate thinking about new federal research priorities and guide development of future Academies activities related to the science of sustainability.
