The mandate of the NRF is to promote and support research through funding, human resource development and the provision of the necessary research facilities in order to facilitate the creation of knowledge, innovation and development in all fields of science and technology, including indigenous knowledge, and thereby contribute to the improvement of the quality of life of all South Africans.

SASAC stands for the Southern African Systems Analysis Centre. It is a multi-year initiative developed by South Africa’s National Research Foundation (NRF) and the Department of Science & Technology (DST) as part of its membership of the International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis (IIASA).

The programme was developed in recognition of the pivotal role that Systems Analysis and research in this field can play in solving both global challenges and those faced by developing nations.
