With the publication of the Synthesis Report earlier this month, the publication cycle of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) Fifth Assessment Report (AR5) is now complete. To discuss the implications of the results for Austria, the Climate and Air Quality Commission of the Austrian Academy of Sciences will host a panel of lectures followed by a discussion with Austrian climate researchers who contributed to the report.

Presenters reflect the diversity of topics as well as institutions involved in assessing climate-related topics. Georg Kaser (Innsbruck) will speak about physical changes of glaciers and their interactions with atmosphere and the global radiation balance. Intergenerational justice is the driving parameter for the ethical considerations performed by Lukas Meyer (Graz) – in an IPCC context, the question of “justice” needs to stand also the cultural diversity of affected peoples. Finally, Keywan Riahi (IIASA) considers inisghts from AR5 for mitigation of greenhouse gas emissions. IIASA researcher Wilfried Winiwarter will also speak at the event. He serves as the deputy chair of the OeAW Climate and Air Quality Commission.

Nineteen IIASA researchers have contributed to the AR5 report, and three served as writing team members on the recently released Synthesis Report.
