07 November 2016 - 18 November 2016
Marrakesh, Morocco
This year's annual climate meeting has been designated "The COP of Action," following the adoption of ambitious climate targets with a binding agreement at last year's Paris meeting.
IIASA research includes recent studies of how to reach the ambitious 1.5 and 2-degree targets set last year; research to support the national action plans, or INDCs that underlie the agreement; and the loss and damage mechanism which was designed to help victims of climate change impacts.
At COP22, the annual climate negotiation conference of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), IIASA researchers will participate in several side events aimed at providing their expertise to policymakers. COP22 website
IIASA researchers taking part in COP22 and related events include: Florian Kraxner, Volker Krey, Reinhard Mechler, Michael Obersteiner, Pallav Purohit, Keywan Riahi, Joeri Rogelj

Perspectives and Options on Loss and Damage
What would an inclusive framework to address loss and damage look like? The issue of loss and damage has gained enormous traction in international climate policy. However there is a lack of promising options for moving forward. This session aims to provide some clarification and debate of the challenges to inform and support policy options. IIASA researcher Reinhard Mechler will participate in this session, co-organized by Practical Action.

Climate change and health in Indian cities: Modeling the impacts of heat and air pollution and potential co benefits from mitigation and adaptation.
Indian cities rank high in air pollution at the global scale; for PM2.5 which is associated with serious health impacts. Managing future air quality in Indian cities requires measures that also reduce greenhouse gas emissions. This session aims to highlight co-benefits of air pollution prevention strategies in Indian cities. IIASA researcher Pallav Purohit will participate in this session organized by the Indian Ministry of Environment, Forestry, and Climate Change.

Ratcheting up NDCs: Consistent national roadmaps towards the global objective of 1.5C and 2C
Based on a collaboration of 18 institutes from Europe, Asia and the Americas, viable strategies for ratcheting up the NDCs, and their implications for sustainable development (SDGs) are presented. Specifically, we compare the effort across key countries, such as the EU, China, Brazil and India. This side event is co-organized with the Association for Development and Research of Sustainable Habitats (ADaRSH). IIASA researchers Volker Krey and Keywan Riahi will take part.

IIASA research shows the way forward on climate change
Recent IIASA research looks at national action plans on climate change, the role of land use in climate mitigation, as well as what would be needed globally to limit climate change to 1.5 degrees C.
The Paris Agreement on climate change goes into effect today, but while the agreement set ambitious targets for tackling climate change, scientists say there is a long way to go to achieve it. Research suggests pathways to get the world on track. More
The Paris Agreement included groundbreaking text on the need for a mechanism to help identify risks beyond adaptation and support the victims of climate-related loss and damage—but how exactly it will work remains unclear. New IIASA research lends insight to policymakers on how to move forward. More
Individual country pledges to reduce greenhouse gas emissions would need to be strengthened in order to limit future climate change to well below the 2°C limit included in the Paris climate agreement, according to a new assessment. More
In order to meet the goals set by the Paris climate agreement, agriculture will need to reduce emissions substantially. In a new study researchers propose a target for greenhouse gas emissions from farming that could meet those goals. More
An average global temperature rise of 1.5°C or 2°C over the coming century would have substantially different impacts on the planet, according to a new study. More
The application of insurance as a mechanism to help vulnerable people adapt to the impacts of climate change is gaining international support. Experts support the idea but warn of potential problems. More
A new study finds that climate policies that fail to take into account interlinkages and trade-offs could hamper progress on other sustainable development goals. However, energy efficiency improvements can reap synergies between the goals. More
A new study finds that the world can emit even less greenhouse gases than previously estimated in order to limit climate change to less than 2°C. More
