Since 1966 the College of Population Studies (CPS) at Chulalongkorn University has carried out three major functions - teaching and training, research, and information dissemination - in the field of population and related areas including health, environment, gender, family planning and reproductive health, and ageing. This year marks the 50th anniversary of CPS and on this occasion it will host a conference under the theme "Half a Century of Thai Population and World Population" on 22 November 2016 in Bangkok, Thailand.

The World Population Program (POP) at IIASA and the CPS have a long tradition of collaboration particularly in the fields of aging and climate change adaptation. For many years Sergei Scherbov has conducted “hands on” courses in the field of demographic analysis, new methods and concepts in demography, population projections, and computer applications with a focus on aging societies for junior scientists and early-to mid-career professionals from around the world at the CPS to share IIASA research with an international audience.

In 2000 IIASA, the National University of Singapore and Chulalongkorn University established the Asian MetaCentre for Population and Sustainable Development Analysis. A larger collaborative project of POP and the Asian MetaCenter "Science for Sustainable Coastal Development" focused on strategies for sustainable coastal reconstruction and development after the 2004 Indian Ocean Tsunami disaster and was part of the bigger IIASA study on Forecasting Societies’ Adaptive Capacity to Climate Change funded by European Research Council. In this framework, IIASA and CPS researchers have published jointly on demographic differential vulnerability in the context of impacts of natural disasters/climate change, and the ability to respond and cope with consequences of extreme weather events. The recently published special issue of the Vienna Yearbook of Population Research entitled "Demographic differential vulnerability to climate-related disasters" is the outcome of a thematic conference  organized jointly by the IUSSP Scientific Panel on Climate Change, the CPS, and POP in 2014. On July 1, 2015, IIASA’s World Population Program and the University of Shanghai, China, formally agreed to establish the Institute for Asian Demographic Research in Shanghai which also acts from now on as the headquarters of the Asian MetaCentre.

Another collaboration between POP and the CPS are the Asian Demographic and Human Capital Data Sheets 2008 and 2012 which present demographic data and projections of the population by age, sex and educational attainment to 2050 for all Asian countries.

Consequently, POP Program Director Wolfgang Lutz and Deputy Program Director Sergei Scherbov are invited keynote speakers at this event. Lutz will give an outline about the past and future prospects of human capital in Asia, one of the key research fields at POP. Scherbov is one of the leading experts in the field of measuring aging and will give a presentation on "World Population Aging: Opportunities and Challenges", covering the trends during the past 50 years as well as forecast for the next 50 years and the role of demography in the context of aging society. He is currently Principal Investigator of the European Research Council (ERC) funded research projects at IIASA, entitled Reassessing Aging from a Population Perspective (Re-Aging).
