The RESTORE+ “Addressing Landscape Restoration on Degraded Land in Indonesia and Brazil” project helps to consider sustainable restoration options on tropical degraded land in Indonesia, Brazil and the Congo Basin in cross-sectoral forestry policies.
Forest ecosystems in tropical countries provide important services like water storage or erosion protection. The degradation and non-sustainable management of forests in Indonesia and Brazil cause damages both on global and local level.
New activities are needed to restore degraded land in order to protect our biological diversity, mitigate climate change and secure human well-being. How can we enable the sustainable use of degraded land? Which tools help us to improve information on degraded land? How can we support decision making on sustainable land use management in order to treat degraded land appropriately?
RESTORE+ brings together 10 international partners to develop tools and recommendations for decision-making and capacity building in Indonesia, Brazil and beyond on such issues. The project models different scenarios for landscape restoration and follows an innovative approach: It uses updated land use datasets, citizen-sourced land-use information and identifies bioenergy perspectives of degraded land. These multi-objective scenarios help decision and policy makers to restore and implement sustainable food/energy/forest production options over tropical degraded land.
RESTORE+ is funded by the ICI (German International Climate Initiative)/BMUB and runs from 2017-2022.
